The great Karthik

Karthik is the most auspicious month of the Calender, and with the setting in of Karthik Purnima or full moon of the month another round of festival begins in the eastern part of the country. In West Bengal it is Jagadhatri Puja, in Orissa it is the time for famous Bali Yatra and in Bihar the Chaath, in Assam it is the time for Kati Bihu or popularly known as Kangali Bihu or Festival of the poor, in Manipur it is the time for their famous manipuri Ras Lila or Bishnu Utsav introduced in Manipur during 18th Century King Bhagya Chandra Dev.
It is popularly believed that Jagadhatri Pujo in West bengal was introduced by Raja Krishnachandra of Nabadweep to establish the sakto dhamma or dharma of sakti, for Jagadhatri is considered as the sattwa rup of truth and eternal power as the Raja and Tamas rup are respectively upheld in the images of Durga and Kali.   Some believe that it was the friend of Krishna chandra and another Zamindar Raja suryanarayan Dev who first introduced the Jagadhatri Puja in ChandanNagore.
Bali Yatra of Orissa held with great fan fare at Cuttak and some other places in Orissa situate on the banks of Mahanadi is a commemoration of age old belief that during this time of the year men sailed to the land of Bali, Java, Sumatra for trade and exchange in boats sailing through Mahanadi to get into the Bay of Bengal.
As a commemorative gesture people do the puja and yagna on the river bank and float boats made of wood, banana shell and hard board and fill them up with flower and lighted incense stick with great fan fare as if the yatra is set into motion even today, Traditional perception of an ancient period activityof maritime glory  is kept alive through festival celebrations.
The Karthik festival of Bishnupriya Manipuris is a month long affair beginning with karthik purnima and ending with Rass Purnima. It is a celebration of Radha Krishna's eternal love. Bishnupriya Manipuri is also a language spoken in parts of Assam, Tripura, Manipur in India, in Bangladesh, Burma.
